U.S. Department of State Announces New Nonimmigrant Visa Application Fees
The U.S. Department of State announces a worldwide increase in visa application processing fees for certain categories of nonimmigrant visas. The Department of State is increasing fees to ensure sufficient resources to cover the rising cost of processing nonimmigrant visas. The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos will begin collecting the new fees from nonimmigrant visa applicants having interviews scheduled on or after June 4, 2010.
Under the new worldwide schedule of fees, applicants for all visas that are not petition-based, including B1/B2 tourist and business visitor visas and all student and exchange visitor (F, M and J) visas, will pay a fee of $140. The new application fee for petitioned-based work visas (H, L, O, P, Q, and R visas) will be $150; for fiancé or K visas, $350; and for investor or E visas, $390. All fees are payable in U.S. dollars or equivalent in Naira. This is an application fee and does not ensure a visa will be issued.
Beginning June 4, visa applicants can pay the $140 visa application fee at any of the existing UBA branches that collect these fees on behalf of the U.S. Mission. Over 95% of nonimmigrant visa applicants in Nigeria will be covered by the $140 fee. Applicants applying for work visas, fiancé visas or investor visas can pay the additional visa application process fee at either the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos on the day of the interview. Please note, all applicants whose visa interview is on or after June 4, 2010 must pay the new fee. Applicants who paid the lower visa application process fee of $131 and have an interview on or after June 4 will be required to pay the additional fee amount on the day of the interview at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos.
The new, tiered fee structure was created to cover the higher costs for processing certain categories of nonimmigrant visas that are more complicated and require more in-depth consideration. The Department of State is required to recover, as far as possible, the cost of processing nonimmigrant visas through the collection of the application fees. For a number of reasons, including new security enhancements, the $131 fee set on January 1, 2008, no longer covers the current, actual cost of processing nonimmigrant visas.
Additional information about the visa application process can be found at the U.S. Mission website http://nigeria.usembassy.gov/
As of March 9, 2010, the Consular Electronic Application Center website is now fully functional and
accessible to visa applicants after experiencing a period of technical difficulties. All applicants should proceed
with completing a DS-160 prior to their visa interviews. The staff of U.S. Embassy Abuja and U.S. Consulate General
Lagos will continue to accommodate all applicants who scheduled visa interviews during the period March 1-12, 2010.
We apologize for the inconvenience while the system was under repair.
For more information, see http://nigeria.usembassy.gov
By March 1, 2010, all persons applying for a U.S. non-immigrant visa in Abuja or Lagos will be required to submit visa applications via the Internet using the DS-160 online visa application form.

October 2, 2009 |
The U.S. Mission to Nigeria announces an increase in the visa online appointment
and passport pass back fee from 3500 Naira to 5800 Naira, effective Monday, October 5.
The fee increase is necessary due to the rising costs of maintaining the appointment
and pass back services in Abuja and Lagos and the expansion of visa applicant in-take
services at the U.S Embassy and the U.S. Consulate General.
As before, fees are paid at selected branches of UBA.
